Is Your Reputation Going Down The Drain?

reputation management

In this age of the internet, it is entirely possible that one day you will wake up and find your so-far good reputation has gone down the drain, because somebody has written an article badmouthing you, and this article has made its rounds on a couple of social networking sites, or worse still, gone viral, among other things.  It is precisely because of these articles that the search engines will list your name on their search results, particularly if these are the only articles with your name in them.  If anybody looks up your name on the net, you’re dead.

What do you do?

Couple of things. Either

1. Sue the butt off the writers of these articles.  Easy to do, there being tons of lawyers around who will, for a fat fee, offer to do the needful.  A bit difficult if the badmouthing was justifiable, and the defendants could dig up even more dirt than you can possibly hide.

or

2. Get a Public Relations firm with good SEO (Search Engine Optimization) abilities to overcome the competition.  They call them Online Reputation Management Firms these days.  Fight fire with fire, that is.  This is where internet SEO experts have another lucrative business opportunity.  What they do is to post a great deal of positive content about their client on the web.  By initially using up to 15 or more pieces of good positive news releases or articles about their client, they masterfully add on little SEO tricks to ensure that these articles are picked up by search engines and show on the first page of search results about their client, practically pushing out all the bad news to the next following pages (where they will not be seen anyway).  Sometimes the good content has to be created if it did not exist in the first place.  That’s where the public relations part of the business comes into play.

Following this initial so-called aggressive phase of counterattack, which can lasts some months till the good reports are shown on search engines, there is a maintenance phase, which essentially is more of the same.
