Surprise! Surprise! Here I was, cracking my head, trying my best to think of something to write about. Nothing came to mind that could have been appropriate for this blog, unless readers wanted to read about dogs, cats and women. The writers’ muse had temporarily taken leave of absence, and all I could do was envy the great bloggers who could seemingly write post after post of solid sensible material, day after day, without even a hint of writer’s block.
Then came the Great Discovery - that some of these great bloggers actually utilised other people’s efforts on and off to maintain their blogs! I chanced upon the term Private Label Rights today while surfing for ideas. My first impression was that Private Label Rights was something akin to the Original Equipment Manufacturers arrangement (as in the motor trade), except this might have applied to consumerables such as cigarettes and alcohol. Turns out I wasn’t too far wrong here.
Wikipedia explains Private Label Rights or PLR (as applied to blogging) as content which can be bought or sold in the form of articles, e-books or reports to multiple buyers, where the buyer has the right to modify the content and then pass it off as his own effort, i.e. claim ownership of the content. This may cost the blogger a few cents or even a couple of bucks to buy, but it sure saves him a lot of trouble finding something to blog about. As long as the content is relevant to his blog, why not? A lot of bloggers join private label clubs on a membership basis, and in return get regular relevant modifiable content which apparently contains essential key words which will help boost the ranking of the buyer’s blog, and subsequently his income from the blog.
This arrangement offers, on the other hand, great opportunities for bloggers who make far more money as ghostwriters for PLRs (because they can sell their articles multiple times) than they can make as ghostwriters for individual clients where they are paid by the page.
