Made very simple these days. No longer do you have to do it like magazine publishers by hunting for advertisers to advertise on your blog site. These are already done for you. Register your blog with some or all of the following ad serving programs (this list is not exhaustive):
GOOGLE ADSENSE www.adsense.com
BIDVERTISER www.bidvertiser.com
TEXT LINK ADS www.text-link-ads.com
AUCTION ADS www.auctionads.com
KONTERA ADS www.kontera.com
SHOPZILLA www.shopzilla.com
AZOOGLE ADS www.azoogle.com
TTZMEDIA ADS www.ttzmedia.com
These entities will allow you to paste their codes onto your blogsite upon successful registration. Text (sometimes text+image, and recently video) advertisements of companies advertising through them will automatically appear on your blog, and they will change periodically. Usually the advertisements will be of some relevance to your blog content. If your readers click on the ads in your blog, they will be directed to the websites of the relevant advertisers (where, hopefully, they will be influenced to buy whatever is being advertised!) Advertisers have an arrangement with the ad server program where they will pay the ad server for every click made on your blog, and you are then paid a certain percentage of that payment.
What is very important is that you never click on ads on your own website or blogsite in the hope of increasing your click rate and thereby increasing your income. Neither is it permissible for you to make arrangements for others to click on your ads. Similarly asking readers to click on ads in your site is also a no-no.
(So here we have a rather strange situation whereby you try to get readers to your site, and yet make conscious efforts not to induce them to click on your ads, hoping instead that they will be attracted to the ads served in your site like flies to honey and find them attractive enough to be clicked upon. Because of these constraints, a whole new industry has sprung up with expert opinions being expressed about how to lure readers to the ads by strategically placing them in various areas of the blog and making them look like part of the post they are reading. But more about that in a later post)
These guys (especially at Google Adsense ) are very smart and can detect that you have committed a mortal sin (in their eyes) so very easily. Actions of this nature will result in your being blacklisted by the relevant company and their ads withdrawn from your site. If this happens with the bigger companies such as Google Adsense, it can mean a substantial drop in income.

[...] Advertisements. A few varieties here. If your blog has a lot of traffic, you can have a business arrangement where you allow companies to place their ads on your blog for money. This is either a direct arrangement with individual client companies or via middlemen such as Performancing Ads. Or you can use pay-per-click Google Adsense ads. In this arrangement Google Adsense places text or image advertisements on your site and you get paid by Google if visitors click on the advertisements. [...]
